Baru Alivelamma
She was born in September 1895 in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Inspired by her husband’s involvement in themovement, she joined the fight for Indian independence in the 1920s. In 1930, alongside activist Kamala Nehru, Alivelamma led amass boycott of foreign clothes and liquor in Allahabad, present-day Prayagraj. She was punished for her involvement and spent next several years in numerous jails, including Yerrawada Central Jail and Sabarmati Central Jail.
Durgabai DeshmukhÂ
She was born in Rajmundry and was an Indian freedom fighter, lawyer, social worker and politician. She was a member of the Constituent Assembly of India and of the Planning Commission of India. A public activist for women’s emancipation, she founded the Andhra Mahila Sabha (Andhra Women’s Conference) in 1937. She was also the founder chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board. In 1953, she married C.D. Deshmukh, the first Indian governor of the Reserve Bank of Indiaand Finance Minister in India’s Central Cabinet from 1950 to 1956.
Duvvuri SubbammaÂ
She was born in 1880 in Draksharamam, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. was an Indian independence activist who played an important role in the Indian independence movement. She was one of the founders of thewomen’s congress committee. After her husband’s death, she took up activism and joined the Quit India Movement against the British Raj. She took part in the civil disobedience movement and strongly advocated total freedom from British rule in India.In 1922, she organized the women’s congress committee. In 1923, she organized a meeting in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, where hundreds of women volunteers attended the Kakinada Congress Mahasabha. Subbamma organized Andhra Mahila Sabhas that trained and educated women in the national freedom movement and was instrumental in galvanizing support of the women in the Indian independence movement. She extensively traveled throughout Andhra Pradesh promoting women’s empowerment.
