Damerla Rama Rao

Damerla Rama Rao was a renowned Indian painter born in Rajahmundry in 1897 and is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Indian art from Andhra Pradesh. His paintings were known for their graceful composition, decorative style, and rich portrayal of Indian culture and traditions. Art critics often compared his works to those of the famous French post-Impressionist artist Puvis de Chavannes for their elegance and artistic depth.
Rama Rao gained widespread recognition for his exceptional artistic talent at a young age. It is said that the then Viceroy of India, Lord Reading, was greatly impressed by his painting “Godavari of Eastern Ghats” and personally purchased the artwork. In 1923, he founded the Rajahmundry Chitra Kalashala, an art school that trained and inspired many young artists in the region.
Some of his internationally acclaimed paintings, including Siddartha Ragodayam, Pushpaalankarana, and Kartika Pournami, were exhibited in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, London, and Toronto, where they received appreciation and awards. He was also honoured with the prestigious Viceroy of India Award for his contribution to Indian art and culture. Despite his short life, Damerla Rama Rao left behind a lasting artistic legacy that continues to inspire generations of artists.
