PROGRAMME AGENDA

DATE:FRIDAY, 5TH FEBRUARY,2016

VENUE: Development Alternatives Headquarters, B-32, Tara Crescent, Qutub Institutional Area, New Delhi 16

The Development Alternatives World Headquarters, located in New Delhi, is one of the first buildings in India that aims at Zero Emissions.

The building is best described as a living ecosystem: a fine balance of natural and man-made processes employing environment-friendly energy, material and water management methods. A living testimony to the vision, mission and commitment of Development Alternatives to creating a national future that is based on social justice and a cleaner environment. It is already becoming the benchmark for green buildings in India.

CONCEPT NOTE:

Smart Cities focus on their most pressing needs and on the greatest opportunities to improve lives. They tap a range of approaches – digital and information technologies, urban planning best practices, public-private partnerships, and policy change – to make a difference. They always put people first. The strategic components of area-based development in the Smart Cities Mission are city improvement (retrofitting), city renewal (redevelopment) and city extension (greenfield development) plus a Pan-city initiative in which Smart Solutions are applied covering larger parts of the city. Some typical features of comprehensive development in Smart Cities are:

  1. Housing and inclusiveness – expand housing opportunities for all
  2. Creating walkable localities –reduce congestion, air pollution and resource depletion, boost local economy, promote interactions and ensure security. The road network is created or refurbished not only for vehicles and public transport, but also for pedestrians and cyclists, and necessary administrative services are offered within walking or cycling distance;
  3. Promoting a variety of transport options – Transit Oriented Development (TOD), public transport and last mile para-transport connectivity
  4. Enhanced investment in smart cities and high-speed trains, partnering with Germany’s medium and small enterprises, and co-operation in the clean energy are among the top priorities
  5. Energy Efficiency & Energy Management are an essential part of Smart Cities both on micro & macro level.

Pillars of a Smart City

  1. Institutional Infrastructure (including Governance)
  2. Physical Infrastructure
  3. Social Infrastructure
  4. Economic Infrastructure

Looking at the Physical Infrastructure, it is important for all of us to get down to the implementation of these areas. Physical Infrastructure refers to its stock of cost-efficient and intelligent physical infrastructure such as the urban mobility system, the housing stock, the energy system, the water supply system, sewerage system, sanitation facilities, solid waste management system, drainage system, etc. which are all integrated through the use of technology. For the Workshop we would be focusing on:

  1. MOBILITY & TRANSPORT
  2. ENERGY MANAGEMENT & EFFICIENCY
  3. SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION & AFFORDABLE HOUSING
  4. C&D WASTE
  5. GREEN BUILDINGS
  6. INDOOR AIR QUALITY
